Honeywell Awards Grant for getSTEM Web Portal
Minneapolis, MN (June 29, 2010) - The Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) is pleased to announce that Honeywell Hometown Solutions has awarded $10,000 to support getSTEM, an innovative web portal that links business resources with education needs in order to prepare students for post-secondary education programs and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Honeywell Hometown Solutions is the community outreach program of Honeywell Aerospace.
The innovative getSTEM (www.getSTEM-mn.com) web portal allows teachers to ask for community assistance in having materials donated to their classroom, guest presentations, volunteers for field trips and much more. Local businesses use the website to offer their K-12 outreach programs that teachers may incorporate into their classroom. Using getSTEM teachers and businesses "just ask, just offer...it just makes sense!"
"Honeywell is committed to cultivating our next generation of science and technology professionals," stated Christine Turner, senior technical manager for Honeywell and member of MHTA's ACE Leadership Program Alumni Executive Committee. "We're pleased to be a part of this innovative web portal for teachers to find the assets they need to build a bright future for every Minnesota student."
"I applaud Honeywell's ongoing commitment to STEM education," said MaryFrances Schurb, MHTA's interim president. "The getSTEM web portal is a vital link to introducing students to the idea that by applying their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math, they can solve real-world problems. We are grateful to Honeywell and all of our sponsors."
getSTEM is a partnership between the Minnesota High Tech Association and the Minnesota Department of Education. Honeywell joins 3M, Ecolab, Inetium, Microsoft and Thomson Reuters as a sponsoring business.
getSTEM launched on February 2, 2009. In the first year of operation getSTEM made 150 connections impacting an estimated 8,000 students.
